Did you know your dentist might be the first to notice signs of dementia? Because patients typically visit the dental office more often than other health care providers, dentists are uniquely positioned to identify subtle behavioral changes that might signal cognitive decline.
With dementia rates on the rise—Alzheimer’s deaths have doubled since 2000—dentists are becoming important allies in early detection. Common clues include patients arriving on the wrong day or becoming anxious about missed appointments. While these can happen to anyone, dentists are trained to notice patterns that could indicate something more serious.
To better equip dental teams, new training programs like “Dementia-Friendly @ Work for Healthcare” and the “Dementia-Friendly Dental Practices Advanced Training” have launched in Minnesota. These sessions teach dental professionals how to recognize early symptoms, improve communication with patients and their care providers, and create a safer, more supportive environment for those living with dementia.
Early detection means families can seek further evaluation, and dental teams can adjust care appropriately. With greater awareness and empathy, dentists play a vital role in supporting the health and dignity of patients facing cognitive challenges.
