Periodontal/Gum Treatment

While about 50% of adults over the age of 30 have gum disease, do not be afraid. It can easily be treated. Dr. Lehman offers full periodontal services. We can help you with

  • Bleeding gums

  • Swollen gums

  • Receding gums

  • Loose teeth

Gum disease should be treated as soon as possible because it’s linked to increased risk factors for stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory disease.

There are generally three phases of treatment:

Phase 1: The periodontist does scaling and root planing during this phase to clean your teeth deeply and remove plaque and calculus. Medications may also be prescribed.

Phase II:: If the deep cleaning was not completely effective, the periodontist might opt for surgery. This may be due to the pockets of infection or plaque and tartar being too deep to clean. Anesthesia is used and there is generally pain for about a day.

Phase III: This phase is entirely focused on prevention so there is no recurrence. You will be instructed on the proper oral hygiene practices to follow, including brushing your teeth properly and carefully as well as daily flossing and more frequent dental visits.
